Accomplishments

Four years ago, I promised to put students first and at the heart of every decision.  

For kids & parents I have:

  • Stopped neighbourhood high schools from being sold off to fund repairs somewhere else.
  • Fought for millions of dollars to repair crumbling schools in Toronto-Danforth and across the city
  • Negotiated the creation of the XOTO schools program that improves film and television access to underused school space, and provides film/television opportunities for students
  • Pushed the City to implement its road safety plan as soon as humanly possible so that our school zones are safer for our children.
  • Led the charge to simplify and reduce “back to school” and trip paperwork for parents     
  • Introduced the innovative Outdoor Play and Learning Program (OPAL) to the TDSB
  • Cut through red tape for a variety of projects and programs: William Burgess (schoolyard), Roden/Equinox (flooring); Blake (new fencing); Withrow (American Sign Language program); Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) awareness campaign in schools
  • Saved local chess program from cancellation

Toronto_Pride

For childcare I have:

  • Led the board’s effort to create TDSB-operated extended day childcare program
  • Led the TDSB campaign to stop the City from increasing school-based childcare fees

For safety & inclusion I have:

  • Worked closely with local councilors to create safer routes to school
  • Supplied community schools with “Everyone Belongs” campaign materials for students and teachers, in response to acts of hate in our community
  • Advocated for an end to the “cops in schools” program
  • Negotiated traffic and parking improvements and better community-school relations around the Monarch Park sports dome
  • Found new home for First Nations School and the creation of an Indigenous Centre of Excellence in Education

On TDSB integrity, responsiveness & effectiveness I have:

  • Held monthly workshops for parents and community members on education issues
  • Supported school council chairs with governance issues
  • Helped thousands of parents get answers, navigate the bureaucracy, and solve problems
  • Chaired hiring committee for new TDSB Integrity Officer
  • Improved the Code of Conduct for Trustees
  • Hired excellent new Director of Education, John Malloy
  • Played a key leadership role at the Board, including chairing the Program & School Service committee, co-chairing the Early Years committee; strong voice at Priorities & Planning committee, Alternative Schools Advisory Committee, and Aboriginal Community Advisory Committee
  • Helped craft the TDSB’s new and improved Strategic Plan
  • Strong voice in support of Board’s work to promote equity and inclusion in all forms

TDSB_Meeting
